PP (polypropylene)
PP is a semi-crystalline thermoplastic with similar properties to PE 500.
However, it has higher strength, stiffness and hardness. Below the freezing point, however, PP is very sensitive to impact. Its chemical resistance is comparable to that of PE. Polypropylene can be very well adapted to the desired application by adding reinforcing and filling materials.
Properties
The properties of PP are:- low density compared to other materials
- minimal water absorption
- excellent chemical resistance even against solvents
- high corrosion resistance
- relatively high surface hardness
- very good electrical insulator
- sensitive to cold
- weldable
- very reasonably priced material
Applications
PP can be applied in the following areas:- Pump and valve parts
- Gaskets
- Components in electroplating
- Chemical tank and apparatus construction
- Air conditioning and ventilation technology
- Medical engineering
Modification options
Modification by additives for the improvement of properties.- PP GF30 (with 30% glass fibers for higher stiffness and dimensional stability)
- PP MT (biocompatible PP for medical applications)
- PPs (flame retardant polypropylene)
