POM (polyoxymethylene)
POM (or polyacetal) is a semi-crystalline thermoplastic with high strength and stiffness.
The polymer exhibits good sliding properties and wear resistance as well as low moisture absorption. Its good dimensional stability and particularly good fatigue strength, as well as its excellent machinability, make POM a versatile engineering material, even for complex components. A distinction is made between homopolymers (POM-H) and copolymers (POM-C). The homopolymers have a slightly higher density, hardness and strength due to their higher crystallinity. The copolymers, on the other hand, have higher impact strength, greater abrasion resistance and better thermal and chemical resistance.
Properties
The properties of POM are:- high strength, stiffness and hardness
- good impact resistance even at low temperatures
- low moisture absorption
- high creep resistance and dimensional stability
- hydrolysis resistant (up to ~60°C)
- good resistance to organic solvents
- good dimensional stability
- wear-resistant (high abrasion resistance)
- very good resilience
- Regulation (EU) No. 10/2011, FDA and BGA approval
Applications
POM can be applied in the following areas:- Bearing bushes
- Bearing plates and sliding profiles
- Guides
- Gear wheels, gear racks

Modification options
Modification by additives for the improvement of properties.- POM-C ELS (with carbon black for electrical conductivity)
- POM-C GF25 (with 25% glass fibers for higher hardness and stiffness)
- POM-C + PE (improvement of sliding properties)
- POM-C + PTFE (improvement of sliding properties)
- Semitron® ESd 225* (POM-C + carbon black-free antistatic agent)
- Acetron® MD* (metal detectable POM-C)
- Acetron® VMX* (metal and X-ray detectable POM-C)
Acetron® MD* and Acetron® VMX*
The possibilities of detectable engineering plastics.
While Acetron® MD* is only visually and metal detectable, it is possible to increase safety in food processing even further. Acetron® VMX* is visually, metal and X-ray detectable, enabling food processing machinery manufacturers to be more efficient in detecting damage and wear to machine parts. Both materials have dual food compliance (Regulation (EU) No. 10/2011 and FDA).
The properties of Acetron® MD* and Acetron® VMX* are:
- optimum balance between stiffness and impact strength
- excellent dimensional stability
- continuous service temperature up to 105°C
- highly visible blue color
Acetron® MD* and Acetron® VMX* can be used in the following applications:
- Scraper
- Funnels
- Guide elements
- Grippers
- Gears and racks
Acetron® MD* and Acetron® VMX* are available in the following dimensions:
- Extruded bars Ø 30 / 50 / 80 / 125 x 1000 / 3000 mm
- Extruded sheets 20 / 40 / 80 x 610 x 1000 / 3000 mm
