Food Compliant Plastics

Our high-quality finished parts made of engineering plastics are used in many applications, such as in filling, mixing and portioning systems in contact with foodstuffs. We offer a wide range of products, from prefabricated components made of standard plastics to components made of high-performance plastics that comply with the regulations of EU Regulation 10/2011 and the US FDA Regulation. The aim of both regulations is to exclude the harmful effects of migration of substances to food. This means that the plastic should be such that no harmful amounts can pass to the food. This is regulated in the EU/10/2011 regulation.

EU Regulation 10/2011

Regulation on plastic materials and articles intended to come into contact with food.

The new EU Regulation 10/2011 is valid since 01.05.2011 and is part of the EU Regulation 1935/2004.
Regulation EU / 10/2011 contains a positive list of the starting materials, (monomers), and a substance list for the auxiliaries, (additives), that may be used in the manufacture of plastics.


From the customer side, we need a clear specification that the required article incl.

Declaration of Conformity EU / 10/2011 or FDA must be delivered. Subsequent certification is not possible. The processing of articles incl. EU / 10/2011 is regulated by Kunststoff-Technik Kuhn GmbH in DIN EN ISO 9001 (eg batch tracing). This ensures that the finished part is accompanied by a declaration of conformity from the corresponding material supplier upon delivery.

Good Manufacturing Practice

The raw material is processed by our company in accordance with the regulations of the Regulation (EC) No. 2023/2006 on good manufacturing practice (GMP).

Metal Detectable Plastics

As well as food-approved materials, we also have a range of metal detectable plastics (PEEK, POM, and PE).

These enable food processing machine manufacturers to more efficiently handle damage and wear on machine parts as well as automatically sort out contaminated products.

Metal detectors are the most commonly used devices for detecting possible contamination. Included among the four MD-modified plastics:


  • “Tivar MD” based on PE-UHMW (colour: blue)
  • “Acetron-MD” based on POM (colour: blue)
  • “PEEK-ID” (colour: blue)


The built-in colour was chosen to enable visual detection in addition to metal detection.


Supplementary note:
Detection by X-rays is also possible. All materials offer the required detectability of metal up to 3 x 3 x 3 mm small particles. Each of them has, in addition to the food approval according to EU Directive 10/2011 and the FDA standards, various specific advantages, including high impact and wear resistance as well as good machinability.
