PET (polyethylene terephthalate)
PET can be either amorphous or semi-crystalline thermoplastic in its molecular structure.
The amorphous PET is crystal clear and exhibits lower mechanical strength, as well as much poorer slip behavior than the semi-crystalline type. The semi-crystalline grades, on the other hand, have high hardness, stiffness and strength with excellent sliding behavior and low sliding wear. Due to its good creep resistance as well as low moisture absorption and excellent dimensional stability, PET is excellently suited for use in complex parts with the highest demands on dimensional accuracy and surface quality.
Properties
The properties of PET are:- high strength
- high hardness
- lower coefficient of sliding friction
- high dimensional stability
- good resistance to acids
- good electrical insulation properties
- physiologically harmless (BGA and FDA approval)
- low water absorption
Applications
PET can be used in the following areas:- Sliding and bearing bushes
- Sliding and bearing plates
- Screws
- Wheels and rollers
- Guides, cams, housing
- Pump elements
- Parts for precision engineering
- Parts for electrical applications
Modification options
Modification by additives for the improvement of properties.- Ertalyte® TX* (with built-in solid lubricant for plain bearing applications)
- PET GLS (similar property profile to Ertalyte® TX*)

Ertalyte® TX*
Ertalyte®-TX* is a PET-based material with a homogeneously distributed incorporated solid lubricant.
The specific material composition makes Ertalyte® TX* a unique, self-lubricating plain bearing material. Ertalyte® TX* not only exhibits very high wear resistance, but above all offers an even lower coefficient of sliding friction and higher dynamic load carrying capacity (PV limit) compared to unmodified PET.
Ertalyte® TX* proves particularly effective under high pressure and speed conditions. The material is also ideal for applications where soft metal and plastic surfaces meet. Ertalyte® TX* is a Regulation (EU) No. 10/2011, FDA, USDA and 3A-Dairy compliant material.
* This material is a registered trademark of Mitsubishi Chemical Advanced Materials.
